SCHOOL SCRIPTURE (SRE)

We support the teaching of 'Scripture' (SRE) in public schools in partnership with other churches and we let churches and communities know how SRE benefits schools and students.

'Scripture' is known as Special Religious Education (SRE) in NSW and Christian Religious Education in the ACT. Download flyer for CRE in the ACT.

The Scripture curriculum we support and recommend first is GodSpace, used by tens of thousands of children and teachers in joint denominational classes in NSW and Queensland. GodSpace provides carefully planned lessons to encourage today's Aussie kids to explore life and faith in a way that will help them develop spiritually. GodSpace lessons use the BIble and stories of contemporary Christians to resource teachers to share their experience of life and of God appropriately in the school setting. GodSpace promotes Christian values and the importance of relationship and helps the children to think through issues that are relevant to them from a widely held Christian perspective. View GodSpace Curriculum. As most teachers authorised by the Baptist Union participate in joint programs with other denominations, their curriculum is agreed between the participating clergy. Enquiries about curriculum should be made at a local level.

We also run training events for SRE teachers in accordance with the standard for NSW Scripture teachers agreed by major denominations through the Inter Church Commission on Religious Education In Schools (ICCOREIS).  This training is provided to Scripture teachers from all Christian churches at no cost to those who register.  See trainingcalendar. Look for other opportunities under Training on the ICCOREIS website.

In NSW SRE teachers are representatives of their local minister, their church and, where there is a joint denominational approach, of the other churches involved. (As well as being ambassadors for God and the Christian faith.)
